I. Construction and Rehabilitation of Schools in the West-Bank and Gaza Strip
Based on the Millennium Development Goal; stating “Achieve universal primary education and ensure that by 2015 children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling” and based on the compelling need by the Ministry of Education (MoEHE) to construct new schools so as to cope with the large number of students, BTC has been implementing, in collaboration with MoEHE, the construction of eight new schools ( 6 in West bank and 2 in Gaza Strip). This intervention helps in maximizing students access to the educational sector along with enhancing infrastructure, together with creating a healthy and safe educational environment.
II. Support for Rehabilitation Activities in Water and Electrification Sectors
The Israeli incursions against West-Bank have seriously damaged the water and electricity networks. BTC launched this project to provide spare parts for electricity and water equipment in order to repair the damaged networks. The equipment is supplied to the Palestinian Electricity Authority (PEA) and the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) storage facilities in the West-Bank. PEA and PWA will make the equipment available upon request in order to fulfill the needs of the affected municipalities. This intervention promotes the standard of living conditions in West-Bank and minimizes the damage in the infrastructure sector.
III. Development of the Electrical Power Distribution in the Northern West Bank (II)
During the first phase of the project, starting in the year 2000, 26 villages in the Northern West Bank have been electrified. The second phase was newly launched bearing the same set of objectives of phase I; by substantially enhancing the living conditions of the rural populations through maximizing the access to electricity in the rural villages. During the second phase of the project 11 additional villages of the Northern West Bank will be electrified. Most of the villages are located in Jenin area (7 villages), some in the Tulkarem area (3 villages) and one in Qualqilya area.
IV. Construction of an appropriate low cost technology waste water treatment plant in Artas Village
Sanitation conditions in Artas are inadequate due to the poor management of solid waste and the lack of treatment of the sewage water. This results in Contamination of the well and irrigation water, risk for water- and sanitation-related diseases, excessive costs for the households with a waterproof cesspit and limited appeal for tourists. In cooperation with the Palestinian Hydrology Group (PHG), a Belgian funded sewage network has been built in the main streets of Artas, and a sewage network has been built in the main streets of Artas, and treatment plant for the sewage and the households are to be connected to the existing network. The project aimed at safeguarding the horticulture development in the valley; improving the health situation; minimizing the costs of the actual evacuation of sewage; and eventually making the recycled water available for tree planting.
